Description

Ethical treatment of persons with dementia in a health or mental health setting is essential but can be challenging due to patients’ fluctuating ability to give consent and understand others. Validation, therapeutic fibbing, reality orientation ,and redirection are some of the most common ways to communicate and interact with those who have Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of irreversible dementia. This thought-provoking seminar will examine when these different strategies are most appropriately and ethically applied so patient self-determination and safety are ensured.

Joanna Frankel Related Seminars and Products

Joanna Frankel is a graduate of Towson University with her Bachelors in both Psychology and Gerontology. Following, Joanna obtained her MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work with a clinical concentration and a focus in Aging. Since, Joanna has been working in the long-term care setting for over 15 years. Her experience includes directing the social work department in a 205-bed facility, with clients who have a variety of mental health issues, long term care needs, at end of life, on dialysis and who are ventilator dependent. Additionally, Joanna is passionate about and has expertise in dementia, advance directives/end of life and mental health issues in the elderly. Furthermore, she has spent the last 10 years consulting in several nursing homes, educating social workers on the proper practices of long-term care while providing clinical supervision. Joanna has always educated interdisciplinary teams, patients and families on various topics on aging. When Joanna isn’t working, you can find her playing ball with her husband and 2 boys or at the nearest sushi restaurant.

Describe how dementia can impact comprehension and communication
Explain the difference between therapeutic fibbing, Validation, redirection and reality orientation
Discuss areas of Code of Ethics relevant to ethical dementia communication
Explain how to support families in using validation and therapeutic fibbing appropriately and ethically

Agenda:

30 minutes: Reviewing Dementia

45 minutes: The impact dementia has on communication-what is understood and what is being communicated and the ethical challenges that may result

15 minutes: Break

60 minutes: Understanding the concepts of therapeutic approaches to dementia & relating the Code of Ethics to ethical dementia communication

30 minutes: Supporting Families struggling with appropriately and ethically using varying communication strategies
