Stephanie Goldstein, BSW, LBSW, has been in healthcare for more than 15 years.  Her experience includes both working directly with patients and as a manager in mental health and long term care. She is passionate about educating patients and families on options while promoting self-determination for those with complex physical, cognitive or mental health diagnoses.  A frequent guest lecturer for Johns Hopkins University’s Certificate on Aging program, she also loves teaching professionals about best practices in working with older generations.

  1. Identify top 3 major challenges for LGBT older adults.
  2. Identify 3 challenges in healthcare setting that LGBT seniors can encounter
  3. Name at least 2 best practices in working with LGBT older adults in healthcare and senior living.
  4.  List at least 2 ways to be culturally sensitive to LGBT older adults.
  5.  Name 2 reasons that an LGBT senior may refrain from living an authentic life

 

Agenda:

 30 minutes: Review of terminology and aspects of LGBT community, including senior sexuality

30 minutes: What different LGBT older adults have experienced during their lifetime 

30 minutes:  Challenges of being “out” in a healthcare setting/community

30minutes: Best practices/sensitivity with LGBT older adults in and out of healthcare settings
