Description

By 2030 there will be over 7 Million people age 65 and older who identify as LGBT. This population has faced tremendous challenges during course of their lifetime and continue to during their post-retirement years. What are best practices in working with LGBT seniors in nursing homes, assisted living, adult day care and other healthcare settings? What are their unique needs and how are they sensitively met? Join us for this interactive, informative and fun diversity training class.

Stephanie Goldstein Related Seminars and Products

Stephanie Goldstein, BSW, LBSW, has been in healthcare for more than 15 years. Her experience includes both working directly with patients and as a manager in mental health and long term care. She is passionate about educating patients and families on options while promoting self-determination for those with complex physical, cognitive or mental health diagnoses. A frequent guest lecturer for Johns Hopkins University’s Certificate on Aging program, she also loves teaching professionals about best practices in working with older generations.

Learning Objectives:

Identify top 3 major challenges for LGBT older adults.
Identify 3 challenges in Healthcare setting that LGBT seniors can encounter
Name at least 2 best practices in working with LGBT older adults in healthcare and senior living.
List at least 2 ways to be culturally sensitive to LGBT older adults.
Name 2 reasons that an LGBT senior may refrain from living an authentic life

Agenda:

30 minutes: Review of terminology and aspects of LGBT community, including senior sexuality

30 min - What different LGBT older adults have experienced during their lifetime (Baby Boomers, GI Generation, Silent Generation)

45 min - Challenges of being “out” in a healthcare setting/community

15 minutes-BREAK

75 minutes:

Best practices/sensitivity with LGBTolder adults in and out of healthcare settings
